Stop Pitching. Start Positioning.

Stop Pitching. Start Positioning.

If you’ve ever felt like a cold pitch was a shot in the dark (or worse, a nuisance) you’re not alone. Many freelance writers approach LinkedIn as a place to send messages and hope for replies, but there’s a more effective way. Instead of pitching, consider positioning yourself as the obvious choice for the work your ideal clients need.

When you pitch, you’re asking a potential client to take a leap of faith. When you position yourself, you’re demonstrating your expertise and value before a conversation even begins. This subtle shift makes all the difference on LinkedIn, where clients are constantly looking for writers who understand their world, not those who want a quick gig.

Imagine a client scrolling through their feed or searching for a writer. If your profile and activity make it clear you specialize in their industry, solve their problems, and speak their language, they’ll be far more likely to reach out to you, or at least listen when you do connect.

When you position yourself well, you don’t have to chase clients, they start to notice you. You become part of their world before you ever send a message. And when you do reach out, it’s not a cold pitch; it’s a warm introduction to someone they already recognize and trust.

Let’s say you write for fintech startups. You update your headline to “Fintech Content Writer | Helping Startups Simplify Complex Ideas,” share posts about fintech trends, and comment on posts from fintech founders. When a startup needs a writer, you’re the first person they think of because you’ve made yourself impossible to ignore.

Stop pitching. Start positioning and forming relationships. Let your LinkedIn presence show clients why they should work with you, and watch as the right opportunities come to you.

What We're Loving

Cold Foam!

A daily drink from Starbucks is NOT in my budget, but thanks to their iced chai drinks with a flavored cold foam I wish it was. When my favorite flavors left the building, I asked them how they made them. And they told me! So I went out and got a nifty little machine that makes hot or cold foam (affiliate link). One of the best investments every. The milk foams (silently) while my kettle is boiling, and in less than 5 minutes I'm in flavor heaven. My new routine is a honey latte in the morning and an icy, foamy drink in the afternoon for a fraction of the coffee shop price.

A Crock Pot Lunch Warmer

I always try to cook enough of my evening meals so I have leftovers for lunch. I'm bad about forgetting to eat, especially when I'm in the middle of a project. My family knows me well, and no one wants me to be afternoon hangry, so they got me the Crock Pot Warmer for Mother's Day (affiliate link). Now I put my leftovers in it each morning, carry it up the hill to the office with me, and plug it in. I remember to eat because it makes my whole office smell like good food! (The blue one is really cute in person.)
