What I'm Loving
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride
Years ago, I discovered and devoured "The Color of Water" (affiliate link) by James McBride. So when I finally managed to find the time to read his "The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store' I was hoping it would be just as good.
And it didn't disappoint.
This extraordinary book opens a window into a time, place and community that I have no previous experience of (1930's, people from black and jewish communities just trying to live their lives). He seems to effortlessly weave history, culture, characterisation and dialogue into a smooth flow that carries you away.
And leaves you realising, yet again, that America (or any other country) is full of tensions and contradictions. Broken dreams and sometimes, dreams that come true.
And there are twists aplenty. I won't spoil them for you, but one of them kept me up half the night thinking about it. Well worth a read.
